This Pride month has me reflecting on how hard it is to see our own privilege while we are in it. . I never grew up with an experience of feeling “closeted” and thus I was completely ignorant of my “straight privilege”, until I fell in love with a friend, who happened to be a woman, @emptykate. I sincerely thought homophobia was “over,” at least in urban Canada, but almost 3 years into our relationship, I am still reminded almost every day that our relationship is seen as different. It’s usually little things: we are stared at or get double takes every time we hold hands in public, I have to gently correct “she” when 9/10 people assume my partner is male, there’s often a moment of slight discomfort, or in some (thankfully rare) cases, a thinly-veiled but usually polite disapproval. Apartment hunting recently was a real treat, as potential landlords asked awkward questions and even suggested we consider getting two separate apartments across the hall from each other. I’m still waiting for the Disney or Hallmark Christmas movie where the two princesses live happily ever after, together. Honestly though, there have been times, in the business & medical worlds more than sports and acting, where I have sensed that disclosing I have a same-sex partner led to a lost opportunity or being seen as not fitting in with the group. . I’m so grateful for the brave souls who paved the way with protests, awareness, activism, and Pride, that I’ve never had to personally experience outright violence or aggression. This photo by @bobfridimages , kissing in front of a crowd, captured a moment that was a big deal for us. . So, to say the least, this experience has been eye-opening for me. I now believe the BIPOC community when they say my White privilege is real. I believe the disabled community when they say my able-bodied privilege is real, I believe the Trans community when they say my Cisgender privilege is real. So, this Pride Month (and from now on) I look forward to continuing to find my own blind spots, and to us all working together to not only correct injustices, but to genuinely celebrate the beauty in human diversity. #pride🌈 #blacklivesmatter

Beyond inspired by the courage, resilience, and mental toughness of this strong, beautiful woman. @emptykate has faced so many obstacles and found a way to ride beyond each one. Her epilepsy kept her off the track for almost 4 months before the race, and she still went out and did her best times since before the 2017 crash. That’s a champion. World Champion jersey and 2 world records are the icing on the cake! So grateful to share my life with this amazing woman. Last night, we said goodbye to this beautiful soul. His heart was simply too big for this world - perhaps not surprising, as this creature contained more love and sweetness in his tiny body than seemed possible. . We brought him home exactly 8 years ago today; his time in this world was short, but into it, he packed a lifetime of adventure, wonder, family, and love. . He rallied in his final few days, almost as if he was taking one last chance to experience all of his favorite things: a walk in the woods, sniffing all the sniffs, eating treats, cuddling, wagging his tail, and making sure his people knew they were loved. . I don’t know what comes after, but it gives me comfort to think of Bernard having a blast somewhere, chasing shells thrown at a beach, running up hills in a forest, playing in snow, rolling in grass and wet sand, chewing the squeakers out of toys after dinner, and then burrowing under the blankets in a soft bed. . I feel so blessed and grateful to have experienced this special creature’s love, and to have been part of his pack while he was on Earth. Canadian Bronze Medallists! 🇨🇦🥉Hard to put into words why this medal is so meaningful. Just taking the start line at Nationals with @emptykate this week felt like a symbolic victory over some of the adversity in both our lives over the past couple of years. The number on the stopwatch was nothing special, but this ride was about reconnecting with our love for sport, and giving our best effort for each other. Huge thanks to the volunteers and commissaires, and also to @cyclingcanadaofficial and the other athletes who made this return to the @mattamyvelo feel so welcoming! ❤️
